4 of Croatia’s Best Open-Air Markets

To Market, To Market

In a world of big box stores and shopping malls with megaplexes, the outdoor markets of Croatia are a welcome change. Wander into most towns and villages and you’ll discover produce stalls and colorful umbrellas crowding the heart of charming city squares. Whether you’re in search of fresh produce or locally-made cheese, an antique keepsake or just a glimpse into the day-to-life of locals, these artisanal markets offer an authentic cultural experience and a pretty nice way to spend your day. Here are a few of our favorites:

Dolac Market - Zabreg: Head to this urban market early when the bread is warm and the coffee is fresh. Look for the red outdoor umbrella stands for nuts, produce, flowers and honey. Then, head indoors for specialty meats, herbs, olives and cheese, especially sir i vrhinje, a gooey cream cheese concoction.

Pazar Market - Split: Known as the Green Market, Pazar is the ideal spot to pick up everything from wild asparagus to fresh pomegranates, vintage toys and cooking utensils, to the fixins’ for the perfect summer picnic.

Gunduliceva Poljana - Dubrovnik: Every morning Gundulic Square plays host to the town’s bustling daily market. In the shadows of the cathedral, this market is ground zero for produce and baked goods, fruits and veggies. Meander through the stalls crammed with fish mongers and homemade wine, hand-sewn linens and local olive oils. It’s also the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon coffee or an evening concert during the warm summer months.

Britanski Trg - Zagreb: This Sunday antiques market is an eclectic mixture of books and paintings, religious art and bric-a-brac. Stroll through the maze of stalls in search of treasures, keepsakes and unique wares to remind you of your travels.
